. Clinical details are described of a 6‐year‐old girl who had recurrent episodes of brainstem dysfunction interposed with spontaneous remissions for 5 years before the appearance of characteristic systemic manifestations of lupus erythematosus. The difficulty of establishing the diagnosis is discussed.
