The clinical and pathological details of two patients with severe antibiotic‐associated pseudomembranous colitis are presented. Both cases occurred after amoxycillin therapy for minor infections and are unusual in that they presented with features of acute fulminant colitis, presenting diagnostic difficulty, and occurred in children, where the disease is apparently uncommon. Both responded dramatically to oral vancomycin. In the light of recent advances in knowledge of aetiology and definition of specific therapy, the importance of early recognition of this potentially lethal disorder is emphasized to those prescribing antibiotics for children.
