Cord serum IgA levels were measured in 104 Australian infants by a radiolmmunoassay method with a limit of detection of 0.1 mg/l. Each serum contained IgA and the range of 0.6–58 mg/l showed a log normal distribution curve, geometric mean 3.0 mg/l. Three clinically normal Infants had cord serum levels of 20, 20 and 58 mg/l. The remaining 101 sera had a range of 0.6–10 mg/l. This IgA is thought to represent autologous synthesis by the fetus rather than contamination with maternal blood or transplacental transfer of maternal IgA.
