Abstract A case of an extensive cavernomatous haemangioma is presented. The distribution of the vascular lesion in the lower extremity corresponded to that of spinal nerves, and extended ipsilaterally into the retroperitoneal space and the mesocoion, causing severe retroperitoneal and significant gastrointestinal bleeding. Two almost identical paediatrte cases reported, suggest a common pathogenesis. Severe retroperitoneal bleeding necessitated surgery. Continuing rectal bleeding prompted a trial of corticosteroid therapy. This coincided with a significant increase in the size of the cutaneous lesion, accompanied by local bleeding and platelet trapping.
