White, M. (1979). Aust. Paediatr. J. , 15, 187–189. Distant family treatment: A case of school phobia. This paper presents a specific approach to the problem of chronic school phobia when geographical distance precludes regular ongoing psychotherapy. The approach includes a brief inpatient phase to enable certain groundwork to be undertaken and from thereon irregular outpatient contact. After reviewing and relabelling the problem a series of family tasks are established which are reinforced on a local level by the general practitioner. A case study is utilised to describe the method.
