Walpole, I. R., and Grauaug, A. (1979) Aust. Paediatr. J. , 15, 123–125. Intra‐uterine infection with herpes simplex virus and observed radiological changes. This is a case report of a premature female infant in whom striking radiological changes in the epiphyses were noted on the day of birth. Subsequent isolation of herpes simplex virus from the urine, the clinical course and autopsy findings suggest this agent was responsible for the bone changes. This observation demonstrates another facet of this condition and provides further evidence that intra‐uterine infection with herpes simplex virus may occur by placental transmission from mother to infant.
