Nitrogen balance studies during oral and complete intravenous feeding of small premature infants. Nitrogen balance studies have been performed on 15 premature infants with birth weights less than 1,200 g, who were fed by naso‐gastric tube or by total intravenous nutrition. Each regime was found to be capable of producing growth and positive nitrogen balance. The balance data obtained from this study have been used in combination with nitrogen retention data for foetuses of similar weight and gestational age, reported elsewhere, to predict the intravenous nitrogen requirement of the small premature infant.
