McAndrew, Irene (1976).Aust. paediat. J. , 12, 88–91. Facts and fallacies in a sociological study of asthma. A number of the more popular beliefs about the characteristics of the asthmatic child, fostered by previous studies of select populations, were not born out in a study of a randomly selected population covering the whole range of wheezing children. It appears that there are no characteristics or trends which pertain to the whole asthmatic group. Some factors of stress, and some behavioural disturbances and developmental delays, are common in the small group of severely affected children, as is the child's close bond with the mother and a basic fear of separation.
