SYNOPSIS Citric acid‐stimulated parotid saliva was collected from 42 patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) and from 40 control subjects. Despite considerable overlap of the values from the CF and the control group, the mean concentrations of calcium, amylase and protein were statistically significantly elevated in the CF patients. Five of the CF patients showed marked parotid serous hypersecretion. Parotid saliva samples with elevated protein concentrations became turbid on cooling to 20°. By electron microscopy, the turbid material had the appearance of a colloidal suspension of coalescing droplets.
