SYNOPSIS Current problems in the management of patients with cystic fibrosis are reviewed. Antibiotics for pulmonary infection, pancreatic extracts for malabsorption, and added sodium chloride in hot weather, are the only therapeutic agents of proven value. Physiotherapy is helpful when there is pulmonary infection. Despite widespread usage, there is no acceptable scientific evidence that‘prophylactic therapeutic programmes’significantly alter the natural history of the disease. Emotional problems which arise in the patient and the family are of major importance and should receive more attention from those caring for these children.
