SYNOPSIS The glomerular filtration rate was estimated in 15 neonates by measuring the plasma clearance of 113m In‐DTPA following a single intravenous dose. 113m In‐DTPA clearance was lowest in one infant with peripheral circulatory failure and in 4 with the respiratory distress syndrome and a gestational age less than 35 weeks. Results in the other infants with miscellaneous disorders were within the expected range for normal neonates. The procedure provided a direct and rapid estimate of renal function. Further studies will be required to assess the relative importance of gestational age and the respiratory distress syndrome as determinants of renal function.
