SYNOPSIS The low level of erythropoiesis in the early weeks of life has not been fully explained. Inhibitors of erythropoiesis have been described in some circumstances in man, and this paper describes experiments to determine whether inhibitors are present in the urine of infants. Urine samples were obtained from normal and premature newborn infants, including a group of anaemic premature infants. In both normal and polycythaemic mice, the urine from the infants was found to inhibit erythropoiesis when compared with urine from adults and with saline controls.
