SYNOPSIS In a group of dyspnoeic babies, the great majority suffering from hyaline membrane disease, blood gas measurements were made at regular intervals and analysed with respect to prognosis and also to the natural history of the illness. A good indication of the prognosis was obtained from considerations of both the birth weight, and certain blood gas criteria in the first 12 hours of life.
