SYNOPSIS In a retrospective follow‐up study of 50 pregnancies with low urinary excretion of oestriol, there were 6 neonatal deaths; 5 of 23 survivors who could be traced had definite neurological handicaps, and 6 had minor abnormalities of uncertain significance. There was a high incidence of retardation of infra‐uterine growth. Other causes of low oestriol excretion (maternal hypo‐adrenalism, hepatic and renal insufficiency, and anencephaly) were also encountered. Prospective and controlled studies are required to study further the relationship of low urinary oestriol excretion to neurologic handicap, and the value of the test in assessing the need for obstetric intervention.
