SYNOPSIS Based on the most recently available statistical information an attempt has been made to define priorities in medical education programmes, especially in relation to maternal and child health in several countries of the Western Pacific Region including South East Asia. Sources of data are the ministries of health and medical schools of the regional countries as well as participants in the recent World Health Organization travelling seminar series on paediatric education held in countries of the Western Pacific Region. Opinions expressed in this article are personal and do not necessarily reflect the official policy of the World Health Organization.
