SYNOPSIS This paper presents data on the physical effects of puberty in a group of Tasmanian schoolgirls. The mean age at menarche in 181 girls was 12.86 years. In the majority, the menarche occurred just before the attainment of maximum height and full sexual maturity as judged by breast development and pubic hair growth. A proportion of the girls (19 per cent) reported menstrual symptoms such as abdominal pain and irregularity.
