SYNOPSIS One hundred and forty children with aplastic anaemia were classified into 5 major groups: idiopathic and acquired aplastic anaemia, constitutional aplastic anaemia, leukaemia in the aplastic phase, aplastic anaemia with pancreatic insufficiency, and aplastic anaemia with osteo‐chondrodystrophy. An aetiological classification of idiopathic and acquired aplastic anaemia is proposed and may be of value in predicting the ultimate prognosis. Various biochemical and serological tests may be of use in the differentiation between acquired and constitutional aplastic anaemia and in the assessment of the progress and prognosis of the disease.
