SUMMARY The acid‐base disturbances in 9 babies with a staphylococcal pulmonary infection are described. The disturbances are particularly related to mechanical complications such as obstruction of the airway, empyema, and tension pneumothorax, which occurred during the course of the illness. The need for early recognition and prompt and adequate treatment of these complications is stressed.
