Transmission electron microscopy of rat gastric mucosa fixed by a novel procedure designed for barriers to watersoluble solutes has shown that the intergranular matrix material of gastric mucus is oligolamellar surface‐active phospholipid. It is a gastric surfactant similar to that seen on deeper mucus‐free surfaces also exposed to acid.
