Aeromonas spp. have been reported in association with episodes of diarrhoeal illnesses over many years yet they have not been generally accepted as enteric pathogens for humans. Studies of potential virulence factors produced by Aeromonas species indicate mechanisms by which these bacteria may cause diarrhoea.
