A bstract Single mesophyll cells isolated enzymatically from tobacco leaves divided and grew into aggregates of several cells in defined media. Morphological changes accompanying the division and the growth suggested that these cells are in the course of dedifferentiation. Some of the potentialities of these cells as an experimental material for developmental and genetical studies are discussed.
