The primary aim of this exploratory study was to explore how occupational therapy clinicians define ‘research’ in conceptual and operational terms. The secondary aim of this study was to identify observable and measurable indicators of research which could be used in structured instruments for further study of clinician research involvement. An opportunistic sample of 26 clinicians participated. A self report, open‐ended question survey was used to explore clinician perspectives. Content analysis of data revealed a wide range of categories describing and explaining definitions of research, the way in which these definitions were formulated, and other factors associated with the term research such as the role of researcher, issues personally affecting clinicians and aspects of the environment. Recommendations for further research are made.
