Hotel lounge chairs in 12 Melbourne hotels were measured by occupational therapy students and 48 elderly people were assessed using these chairs. The chairs were scored on the extent to which their measurements met recommended standards and specifications (Harris and Mayfield, 1988) and these scores were then related to the ease of use and comfort as reported by the subjects. The results indicated that none of the 20 chairs measured met the recommended design criteria of Harris and Mayfield. Good design correlated strongly with reported ease of use. The survey gave occupational therapy students an insight into design problems through their involvement in this research project.
