The therapeutic management of contractures is a long term concern in severe cerebral palsy. Occupational therapists, experienced in orthotic management of upper limb contractures using thermoplastic splints, are now beginning to use plaster serial casts with these clients. This paper is a preliminary report on the results of six case studies, with fixed and unfixed contractures, where casting was effective in increasing passive range of movement. Recommendations for post‐casting management are made. The follow‐up of each child twelve months post‐casting should provide valuable information.
