Occupational therapy is faced with potential and actual conflicts in professional practice. These conflicts hinge on the concepts of what a profession is and occupational therapy's attempts at professionalisation. Areas of conflict for the profession include those related to the development of a body of unique knowledge for occupational therapists, the need for a medical prescription in occupational therapy practice, the different concepts of order and disorder for occupational therapy and medicine and lastly the conflict between unionism and professionalism. This paper addresses the concepts of a profession and professionalisation and these four resulting areas of conflict for occupational therapy.
