The history of the modern scientific method is presented as a story of outstanding visionary thinkers, who by their ideas have changed the way that society perceives the relationship between people and their environment. Kuhn's model of paradigm change provides the context for tracing the developmental growth of research activity, through the lives of chosen “glorious rebels”. The essay discusses some issues which face modern researchers, especially in the behavioural sciences such as occupational therapy.
