It has been demonstrated that patient education increases patient compliance with prescribed treatment regimes in rheumatoid arthritis. An education programme, incorporating the use of video‐cassettes as an adjunct to therapy, has been introduced in the Combined Arthritis Unit. The programme was evaluated in the short‐term by the administration of questionnaires to patients both before and after participation in the group. These questionnaires were designed to determine changes in both knowledge of rheumatoid arthritis and available treatments and certain attitudes of patients towards their disease. Results showed significant increase in knowledge after the programme and changes in certain attitudes. Results also showed that neither long duration of illness, nor previous admissions to hospital imply that patients have adequate knowledge. The duration of the resultant changes and their behavioural significance warrant further study.
