Slings are often used in the prevention or treatment of shoulder subluxation in patients with hemiplegia. The advantages and disadvantages of using slings as well as the variety of slings available, should be considered by clinicians when prescribing a sling for a patient. An attempt is made to select a workable short‐list from the many sling types to enable the clinician to determine the most appropriate sling for each patient. Further research and pooling of information is suggested.
