SUMMARY This article examines the position of long‐stay terminal patients in a large geriatric teaching hospital. It describes a possible programme for living while awaiting eventual death. The proposals required minimal financial consideration — in fact most did not involve any financial outlay. The real cost lay in affecting changes in official policy. This cost was ultimately considered too great for present circumstances.
