This paper will examine part two of a study on the effects of massage on pre‐operative anxiety. It includes a qualitative approach. The qualitative methodology involved tape‐recording patients' comments during the massage. At the end of the massage the patients were asked to discuss further their feelings in relation to their experience of being massaged. A number of themes have emerged from this study. However, it was found in this study that massage reduces the client's anxiety pre‐operative by providing them with a space where their vulnerability is respected. It also provides an environment where the clients feel safe to talk and they are able to experience their own subjectivity and sense of being in the world.
