SUMMARY A case of allergic contact dermatitis, caused by colophony in an orthopaedic tape, is presented. This failed to heal, despite removal of the allergen. Only after a period of observation in hospital and, finally, gentle confrontation with the patient, did it become clear that the perpetuation of the dermatitis was an example of contrived disease.
