S ummary We have studied 734 oral mucosal biopsy specimens by the direct immunofluorescence technique in our laboratory at Mayo Clinic over the past 11 1/2 years. The sensitivity of this test was 92% in oral pemphigus, 78% in oral pemphigoid, and 100% in oral lupus erythematosus. The predictive value of a positive test for these diseases was 87%, 88%, and 58%, respectively. For oral lichen planus, sensitivity was poor (37%) but the predictive value of a positive test was good (79%). This paper presents suggestions for use of this test in oral mucosal inflammatory diseases.
