Summary Between 1963 and 1972, 264 pathogenic fungi were isolated from the hands of 1,274 patients. Dermatophytes were the main cause of these infections (63.3%) and Trichophyton rubrum was the predominant species. Yeasts frequently caused secondary infection on already diseased tissue. Dermatophyte infections were more common in males (77.4%) than in females. Candida infections of the hands were more frequent in the female population (67.7%).
