SUMMARY Three major influences must now he accepted as relevant to the clinical expression of lupus erythematosus. Although much remains to he learned of the steps by which these factors lead to clinical disease, lupus erythematosus appears to develop in individuals with a genetic or constitutional predisposition. In many cases the onset of recognizable disease is related to factors external to the patient, such as the absorption of a drug or exposure to sunlight. As the active disease develops, the clinical changes are accompanied by a broad range of immunological events, some of which seem to he involved in the pathogenesis of lesions.
