SUMMARY During the years 1973 to 1980 fifty families with ectodermal defects out of a consecutive series of 1,556 were seen for genetic counseling. Arbitrary groupings were made into those with ectodermal dysplasias, icthyosiform and other related syndromes, hamartomas and those with an underlying mztabolic disorder. Eight of these families are discussed as they illustrate recent advances in prenatal diagnosis.
