S ummary Seven coal tar‐containing skin preparations available in New Zealand have been analysed for several polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by a gas chromatographic method. All the preparations were found to contain PAHs that have been shown to be carcinogenic to animals. A notable feature of the results was the considerable range in concentrations of these compounds. Levels of benzo(a)pyrene were found to vary from 1 to 360 mg/kg.
