SUMMARY Four patients with erythropoietic protoporphyria with positive blood screening tests and increased erythrocyte protoporphyrin levels were treated with oral β‐carotene. Therapy results show a significantly increased tolerance to light exposure. Tables of vitamin A and β‐carotene levels indicate progressive depression of vitamin A and marked increase of β‐carotene. Tolerance to elevated levels of β‐carotene was greater than anticipated, and although vitamin A levels remained within normal limits, long term observation is indicated.
