SUMMARY As reported by Finley (1969), this condition is frequently seen in Australia. It is easily diagnosed, rather difficult to treat and its aetiology and pathogenesis awaits elucidation. It is a dermatosis which affects mainly women with its highest incidence between 30 and 45 years of age. Besides the usual typical examples of perioral dermatitis, during the last year we have seen three rather exceptional examples affecting males. From our general experience and an appreciation of the literature on this worldwide disease, we have been prompted to prepare this report and to speculate on the aetiology and pathogenesis of perioral dermatitis.
