An estimate of the narrow sense heritability of resistance to Alternaria dauci was obtained for the open‐pollinated carrot cultivar ‘ Brasília ’. The estimate, based on plot means of 96 half‐sib families was 0.4032 ± 0.1672, which may be considered in the medium‐low range. Considering this result, it is concluded that recurrent selection based on half‐sib progeny tests, will be more effective than simple phenotypic recurrent selection in increasing the resistance level of ‘ Brasília ’ to A. daucci.
