Embryogenic callus cultures of barley ( Hordeum vulgare L.) were frozen in the presence of a cryoprotector and subsequentjy stored in liquid nitrogen. After thawing, a high percentage of cultures resumed growth after a lag‐period of 2–4 weeks. Plant regeneration was achieved at a frequency comparable to that observed in control cultures.
