Histopathology of experimental vaginal candidosis in immunosuppressed mice

Summary. The histopathology of vaginal candidosis was studied in cyclophosphamide (CY)‐immunosuppressed mice. In severely leucopenic animals acutely treated with high doses of CY the fungal inoculation resulted in a massive invasion of the pathogen, which penetrated the whole thickness of vaginal wall and was able to spread further into the surrounding tissues. In some animals, a haematogenous dissemination of the infection was detected. In mice chronically treated with lower doses of CY, moderate leucopenia combined with impaired antifungal granulocyte activity and suppressed cellular immunity resulted in the development of only superficial mycotic lesions. Pathogenetic mechanisms of vaginal candidosis in immunocompetent and immunosuppressed hosts are discussed. Zusammenfassung. Die Histopathologie der Vaginalcandidose wurde untersucht an mit Cyclo‐phosphamid (CY) immunsupprimierten Mäusen. Bei Tieren mit schwerer Leukopenie, welche hohe Dosen von CY bekamen, hat die Inoculation der Pilze zur massiven Invasion geführt. Die Pilze haben die ganze Vaginalwand penetriert und waren fähig, sich in die umgebenden Gewebe auszubreiten. Bei einigen Tieren zeigte sich eine haematogene Ausbreitung der Infektion. Mäuse, die chronisch geringe Dosen von CY bekamen, zeigten eine moderate Leukopenie mit Stöning der antifungalen granulozytären Aktivität und Suppression der zellulären Immunität, was zu oberflächlichen mykotischen Läsionen führte. Diskutiert werden die pathogenetischen Mechanismen der Vaginalcandidose bei immunkompetenten und immunsupprimierten Wirten.
