Summary. Karyotypes of different morphological forms of oval cell types of Malassezia furfur (previously called Pityrosporum ovule ) were examined by pulsed‐field gel electrophoresis. All strains produced patterns containing seven chromosome bands. These patterns could be separated into three distinct groups, which appeared to correlate with groups based on morphology. Zusammenfassung. Karyotypen morpholo‐gisch unterschiedlicher Formen ovaler Zelltypen von Malassezia furfir (früher Pityrosporum ovale ) wurden pulsfeld‐gelelektrophoretisch untersucht. Alle Stämme produzierten Bandenmuster mit sieben Chromosomenbanden. Diese Muster konn‐ten in drei unterschiedliche Gruppen aufgeteilt werden, die den morphologischen Gruppierungskategorien entsprachen.
