Summary: 65 out of 104 (62.5%) randomly selected boot‐wearing Nigerian policemen had athlete's foot, in a survey carried out in November, 1985. Only 21 of the 65 (32.3%) were mycologically positive; 11 on direct examination, and 10 on mycological culture. The culture positives consisted of Hendersonula toruloidea 2, Trichophyton (T.) interdigitale 1, T. soudanense 1, Epidermophyton (E.) floccosum 1, Candida albicans 1, and Fusarium species 4. This study reveals that athlete's foot is common in boot‐wearing policemen, and that dermatophytes do not play a major role in chronic athlete's foot.
