A Case of Cerebrospinal Fluid Shunt Colonization and Obstruction by Candida albicans

Summary: A 57‐year‐old female was treated with ventriculoperitoneal (V‐P) shunt placement for hydrocephalus secondary to cerebellar hemorrhage. After three months, the shunt connector was found to be obstructed by massive growth of Candida albicans. This was the first well‐documented case of V‐P shunt colonization and obstruction caused by Candida albicans. Zusammenfassung: Eine 57jährige Patientin wurde wegen eines nach zerebellarer Hämorrhagie aufgetretenen Hydrozephalus durch Anlegen eines ventrikuloperitonealen Shunts behandelt. Nach drei Monaten wurde festgestellt, daß das Verbindungsstück des Shunts durch massives Wachstum von Candida albicans verstopft war. Dieses ist die erste Mitteilung fiber die Besiedhmg und Obstruktion eines derarügen Shunts durch Candida albicans.
