Evaluation of Modified Dermatophyte Test Medium for Isolation of Dermatophytes:A Preliminary Report

Summary: A modified dermatophyte test medium (m D. T. M.) prepared from locally available ingredients was evaluated for its efficacy as screening medium for isolation of different species of dermatophytes. Growth of fungus on the medium with colour change from yellow to red indicated the presence of dermatophytes. Out of 116 positive cultures of dermatophytes on m D. T. M., 111 (95.2%) showed the colour change also. Isolation rate of dermatophytes on m D. T. M. and Sabouraud's glucose agar were almost identical. Merits of m D. T. M. are discussed. Zusammenfassung: Ein aus lokal erhältlichen Substanzen bestehendes modifiziertes Test‐medium für Dermatophyten (m D. T. M.) wurde auf seine Wirksamkeit als Screening‐Medium zur Isolierung verschiedener Dermatophyten‐Arten geprüft. Pilzwachstum mit Farbumschlag des Mediums von gelb nach rot wies auf die Gegenwart von Dermatophyten hin. Von 116 Dermatophytenkulturen auf m D. T. M. zeigten 111 (95, 2%) auch den Farbumschlag. Bei Isolierungen von Dermatophyten war der Anteil auf m D. T. M. nahezu der gleiche wie auf Sabouraud‐Glucose‐Agar. Die Vorzüge von m D. T. M. werden diskutiert.
