Antibodies to Candida Albicans in Healthy, Colonized, and Infected Persons

Summary: Diffusion‐in‐gel enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay (DIG‐ELISA) was used to detect class specific antibodies to Candida albicans in sera from 29 patients with Candida albicans isolated from blood, wounds, urine, or vagina. Sera from 106 healthy blood donors served as controls. Precipitating antibodies to Candida albicans were also detected in the same sera with countercurrent immunoelectrophoresis (CIE) and double diffusion‐in‐gel (DD) techniques. The results demonstrate that analysis of at least two serum samples is required in order to distinguish between colonization and deep fungal infection. It is suggested that an optimal serodiagnostical test for infection with Candida albicans should include detection of specific antibodies as well as antigen. Zusammenfassung: Mit Hilfe der Diffusion‐in‐gel‐ELISA‐Technik wurden die Seren von 29 Patienten auf spezifische Antikörper gegen Candida albicans untersucht. Bei den Patienten war Candida albicans aus dem Blut, aus Wunden, Urin oder aus der Vagina isoliert worden. Die Seren von 106 gesunden Blutspendern dienten als Kontrollen. Prezipitierende Antikörper gegen Candida albicans wurden ebenfalls in diesen Seren mit der Gegenstrom‐Immunelektrophorese (CIE) und mit der Doppeldiffusionstechnik (DD) nachgewiesen. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, daß die Untersuchung von wenigstens zwei Serumproben erforderlich ist, um zwischen Besiedlung und tiefer Pilzinfektion zu unterscheiden. Als optimale serodiagnostische Methode bei Candidaalbicans‐Infektionen wird die Kombination eines Antikörpemachweises mit einem Antigennachweis vorgeschlagen.
