The collection sites were located in the xeric low lying coastal areas of the islands. The soil was essentially made up of disintegrated lava and was low in organic matter. Seven species of fungi classified in five genera were isolated: Arthroderma quadrifidum, Chrysosporium indicum, C.keratinophilum, C.tropicum, Ctenomyces serratus, Gymnoascus reessii and a Malbranchea species .
