The systematics of Eutardigrada

Summary The author, in his comments on the article by S chuster , N elson , G rigarick and C hristenberry 1980, maintains to have observed a series of errors and imprecisions; furthermore, he maintains to have observed inadequacies in methodology and interpretation, which, in his opinion, render their conclusions unreliable. In particular, the author criticizes the fact that S chuster et al. have proposed a new systematic arrangement of Eutardigrada without discussing the present systematic arrangement (proposed by the author in 1969), and widiout illustrating any new facts, or new interpretations of the facts to make the new arrangement appear more likely, from a phylogenetic point of view, than the present one. As far as the systematic arrangement of the families is concerned, the author sustains with various arguments that from a phylogenetic point of view, the evaluation criteria for the characters applied by him in 1969 appear reasonable while the criteria applied in the article by S chuster et al. appear to be in contrast with a phylogenetic logic, and lead to a confused and clearly artificial systematic arrangement. In conclusion, the author accepts only the constitution of 3 new genera, and rejects the new systematic arrangement of the families. Riassunto L'Autore, nel commentare il lavoro di S chuster , N elson , G rigarick e C hristenberry (1980), sostiene di avere rilevato una serie di errori e di imprecisioni, ed inoltre rileva carenze metodologiche e interpretative che rendono, a suo awiso, poco attendibili le loro conclusion!. In particolare l'Autore critica il fatto che S chuster et al. abbiano proposto una nuova sistemazione degli Eutardigrada senza discutere la sistemazione attuale (proposta dell'Autore nel 1969), e senza illustrare alcun fatto nuovo o nuova interpretazione de fatti che possano fare apparire la nuova sistemazione come più verosimile, da un punto di vista filogenetico, di quella attuale. Per quanto riguarda la sistemazione delle famiglie, l'Autore sostiene con vari argomenti che, da un punto di vista filogenetico, i criteri di valutazlone dei caratteri da lui seguiti nel 1969 appaiono verosimili, mentre i criteri ora seguiti da S chuster et al. appaiono anche in contrasto con una logica ftlogenetica, e portano ad una sistemazione confusa e chiaramente artificiale. In conclusione l'Autore accetta unicamente l'istituzione di 3 nuovi generi. Zusammenfassung Zur Systematik der Eutardigraden Der Verfasser ist der Auffassung, daß Arbeiten von S chuster , N elson , G rigarick und C hristenberry methodologische Mängel sowie solche der Interpretation enthalten, welche zu Zweifeln an den Ergebnissen berechtigen. Kritisiert wird insbesondere, daß S chuster et al. eine neue Einteilung der Eutardigraden vorgeschlagen haben, ohne die derzeitige systematische Gliederung (vom Autor 1969 vorgelegt) zu erörtern und deutlich zu machen, worin die Vorzüge des neuen Systems in phylogenetischer Sicht bestehen. Hinsichtlich der systematischen Gliederung der Familien kann der Verfasser mit verschiedenen Argumenten belegen, daß die von ihm zugrundegelegten Kriterien einleuchtender und logischer sind als jene von S chuster et al., die zu einem unklaren und völlig künstlichen System führen. Nur die 3 neu beschriebenen Gattungen werden vom Autor anerkannt.
