The morphological characters of 35 isolates of P. cinnamomi collected over a 6‐year period from infected roots of avocado trees from eight different orchards in different parts of Andalusia. southern Spain, were studied. The fact that no fusion organs were found in the single cultures revealed their heterothallic nature. The great similarity and small variation of characters of these Spanish A2 isolates, the hot dry climate, and the fact that the dry cultivated previous crops were olive, grapevine, and almond, are not susceptible to natural infection by P. cinnamomi , suggest that the fungus was not indigenous in this area and was probably introduced on apparently healthy material from California or Mexico.
