The location of lettuce mosaic potyvirus (LMV) in mature ovaries of lettuce plants ( Lactuca sativa ) was studied by conventional thin‐section electron microscopy and immunogold cytochemistry. Flexuous filamentous particles and inclusion bodies characteristic of LMV infection were observed in the integumentary tapetum, integument and ovary wall of the mature ovary but not in the embryo sac.
